Raising the Bars Yoga ~ The Stegman Method℠ is taught by, and was invented by Beverly Stegman, BS, MAud, CR, RYT-200. She has been a yoga instructor specializing in yoga for medical conditions and overall health and wellness for years in the Atlanta area. She was the first and only certified Yoga for Scoliosis trainer in Georgia for many years, and is now one of only a few.

Given her 35+ years of experience in the healthcare industry, education, and certifications as a yoga instructor, yoga for scoliosis instructor, and in certifications in several more areas as a health and wellness coach, including now as a Restorative Exercise Specialist, Bev can teach you safe, effective biomechanically correct natural human movement for optimal health.

  • Bev is a retired gymnast who sustained a back injury at age 18 with subsequent lumbar spinal fusion and progressive scoliosis. Having suffered for years from daily back pain and worsening posture, Bev decided there had to be a natural, organic way to manage pain, improve posture, and find balance. She found it through yoga and restorative exercise. It is her passion to help others decrease pain and improve mobility, stability, and strength for optimal health and wellness.

  • Bev is a yoga instructor specializing in yoga for medical conditions. This renowned and gifted teacher is the first and one of few certified Yoga for Scoliosis trainers in the state of Georgia.

Bev's Vision for Raising the Bars Yoga

“Medical yoga is an effective method of techniques for individuals suffering from and/or preventing injury or illness,” explains certified yoga instructor Bev Stegman. “Medical Yoga blends restorative yoga (supported postures), gentle yoga, breathwork, hands-on energy work, and guided meditation techniques.”

Ms. Stegman began incorporating ballet barre with her yoga techniques several years ago, and one day in June, 2014, she had a unique vision. “What if there were multiple levels of bars, which would use and maximize leverage, gravity and bodyweight for resistance,” Stegman pondered the implications.

She calculated the precise distances for each level of the strategically placed bars, based on countless hours of developing varying yoga techniques and utilizing supported postures, and had the barre structures built to her specifications. Thus, Raising the Bars Yoga – The Stegman Method was born. In developing this unique method of multiple-level barre yoga, Stegman asserts that the techniques challenge one’s core stability and balance, and increases flexibility and strength in ways not typically achieved by traditional yoga or through other therapeutic exercise and treatment.

“Multi-level medical yoga can lengthen and strengthen the spine,” explains Stegman. “It can improve posture and body mechanics, prevent and/or manage back, shoulder, neck, and hip pain, improve breathing capacity, as well as strength and flexibility.” Stegman says these unique techniques can even prevent progression of scoliosis (lateral curve of spine), the progression of kyphosis (excessive rounding of upper spine), and prevent and reduce forward flexed head.

Who can benefit from Raising the Bars Yoga℠? According to Stegman, individuals with back pain, neck pain, hip pain and/or shoulder pain, to include those suffering from arthritis, and fibromyalgia; those with such postural abnormalities as scoliosis, kyphosis, excessive or reduced lordosis, forward flexed head, and sciatica; and people with balance and/or posture issues. “This one-of-a-kind method can help individuals with special needs such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Downs Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, asthma, Reactive Airway Disease, COPD, etc.,” she asserts. “I’m interested to see how we can help athletes utilizing this method, focusing on injury prevention and sports performance enhancement with specific protocols for various sports like running, soccer, softball, baseball, golf, and so forth.”

Raising the Bars Yoga – The Stegman Methodis available in three Atlanta area locations as small group classes (3-6) or private sessions for focusing on individual issues and needs. Those interested may contact Stegman 404-435-5052 to take advantage of a complimentary initial consultation.
